Torn between her forbidden love for a younger man and what she knows to be her duty as a wife, Kátya struggles in an unhappy marriage, stuck in an oppressive and claustrophobic community in 1920s Russia.
Everyone knows everyone else’s business and the neighbours can’t help but get involved. As the hot summer progresses, the pressure begins to build and when the storm breaks, Katya starts to realise she may only have one way out...
Inspired by his love for a much younger woman, Janáček’s music is both powerful and emotional. Lyrical interludes and folk-inspired melodies contrast sharply with short dramatic outbursts, all perfectly reflecting the action taking place on stage.
Directed by Kally Lloyd-Jones, who has recently choreographed Cinderella and The Secret Marriage for Scottish Opera, Kátya Kabanová promises an evening of raw emotion and superb music. Don’t miss your chance to get swept away in this heartbreaking tale of a women whose only mistake was to fall in love.
‘An impressive production. It will sear your senses.’
