The Orchestra of Scottish Opera in Concert
The Orchestra of Scottish Opera in Concert

This annual concert series gives you the chance to see our orchestra performing music you wouldn't necessarily hear in the theatre.  In the stunning setting that is St. Andrew's in the Square in Glasgow, visiting conductors and guest singers join them to explore a range of music that takes full advantage of the intimate and atmospheric venue.

Our October concert, conducted by St Petersburg-trained Stuart Stratford, kicks off with the big-hearted melodies of Copland's Old American Songs featuring the vocal talents of Michel de Souza, a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist, 2010/11. Copland's celebration of the American pioneering spirit continues with his Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring. Stravinsky's baroque -inspired Concerto in E flat Major 'Dumbarton Oaks' and neoclassical masterpiece the Symphony in C complete the programme.

Mozart and Sibelius are the focus of our November concert. Conducted by Minnesota Opera Music Director Michael Christie, the concert begins with Mozart's full-bodied Symphony No.38 'Prague'. Rosalind Coad, Scottish Opera Emerging Artist, 2014/2015, sings Mozart arias, including two he composed for Martín y Soler's seldom-heard Il burbero di buon cuore. After the interval Rosalind returns to perform a selection of Sibelius's songs inspired by Finnish and Swedish poetry. The concert is rounded off with a rare opportunity to hear Sibelius's uplifting Symphony No.3.
