Company Profile: Sarah Christie, Heritage Engagement Officer
Can you describe your job in one sentence?
To celebrate the heritage of the Theatre Royal by telling its stories and encouraging other people to share their stories about the theatre and it’s place in Glasgow’s historical and cultural landscape.
What do you love about working in opera?
I love that working in opera is a whole new experience for me!
10 years ago, did you imagine that you would be working for this Company?
Never. But if it hadn’t been for my focus then (establishing a career in museums and galleries) I wouldn’t have set foot on the path that has led me, ten years later, to Scottish Opera.
If you weren't working in your current job, what would be your ideal profession?
I’m lucky enough to be working in my ideal profession in this job. The Heritage Engagement Officer role involves responsibilities that I take genuine professional pleasure in: research, interpretation, display and, most of all, encouraging people to engage with the building and its history in new and different ways.
What 3 things might people be surprised to learn about you?
In childhood I had the most amazing collection of panda-related memorabilia, which I displayed in a complex system of related groupings (by type) in my bedroom. All now abandoned, although possibly the beginnings of my museum-related ambitions.
Fuelled by mini-eggs and haribo sweeties I recently managed to run my first 10k in under an hour.
I persuaded my husband to buy our current flat on the basis that it had a cat ramp from the kitchen window to the garden. I considered this cat ramp to be of greater importance than a modern fitted kitchen or draught-proof windows. I don’t regret it.
Where is your favourite place to be in the world?
The island of South Uist in the Western Isles. Standing on the beach, looking out over the Atlantic. Maybe it’s even sunny.
