Profile: Fiona Gauld, Graphic Designer
Can you describe your job in 1 sentence?
Basically, I am involved in designing anything and everything that Scottish Opera is involved in, from programmes and leaflets to large format advertising and everything in between!
What do you love about working in design?
I’ve always been interested in design and have spent over 10 years working in the industry, although this is my first job in the arts. The thing I love about this job is that no day is the same. Since there is an in-house design department, and only 2 of us in it, there is the chance to work on a huge variety of projects. It can be very fast paced but that’s part of the fun.
10 years ago, did you imagine that you would be working for this Company?
10 years ago I was working for a new media company as a junior designer and had no idea where my career would take me. My last job was in the music industry, but more dance music, so was very different to opera! I’ve learnt a lot about opera while I’ve been working for the Company, every day is an education!
What has been the most memorable campaign you’ve worked on for Scottish Opera?
Not long after I started with the Company I went to my first performance – The Undersea World of Bubble McBea, which is a children’s show, and I was amazed by it. I had no idea that an opera company would do things like that. I’ve since been to many ‘proper’ operas but that show has stayed with me.
What do you do when you're not working?
I go to the gym or go running several times a week, and love going to see films and bands too. I also like to travel whenever the opportunity presents itself.
What 3 things might people be surprised to learn about you?
I’m running a half marathon on the 3rd of September and am mildly terrified.
I danced on stage at T in the Park this year with Madness at the end of their set.
For my honeymoon I spent 3 weeks travelling on the Trans Mongolian Express - which sounds much more romantic than it actually was!
Where is your favourite place to be in the world?
I love to travel and have been lucky enough to have visited many countries over the years. However my favourite place in the world is New Orleans – I love the whole vibe of the place, the music, the food, the people. I’ve been 3 times and would recommend it to anyone.
