Profile: Karen Cargill, singer
What 3 things might people be surprised to learn about you?
I played in a brass band for a number of years on a variety of instruments including the Eb horn, the cornet and the Eb tuba.
Apart from my husband and son, my other passion is shopping for handbags and shoes.
My secret vices are Heat magazine and Carry on films.
What's your favourite opera moment or character?
The Rape of Lucretia - the moment Lucretia tells her husband Collatinus about what happened to her, and the subsequent consequence. The solo for cor anglais before the voices begin is breathtaking.
What do you do when you're not singing?
Spend time hanging out with my family, especially playing with my little boy Adam who is 1.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
If you weren't an opera singer, what would be your ideal profession?
I'd love to be a therapist for singers, that would be fascinating! I'd also really like to learn about practicing alternative therapies.
Where is your favourite place to be in the world?
In my own bed!
What is your proudest moment to date?
Having my little boy. He is amazing.
Karen is currently singing the part of Isabella in The Italian Girl in Algiers
