Profile: Ruth Wilkinson, Music Director and pianist Opera Highlights
Tell us three things people might be surprised to learn about you?
After many happy years as an adoptive Scot, I'm still a Brummie at heart, even if I don't sound like one most of the time. A few years ago I lived for six months in Tennessee, and came home with a taste for fried green tomatoes and country music. I don’t watch any TV soaps. I am, however, addicted to The Archers.
What do you do when you’re not performing?
I have a five-year-old daughter who keeps me pretty busy. We both love cooking, swimming, and going to the cinema.
If you weren’t a musician, what would be your ideal profession?
That’s a tough one. Something useful, I hope – I did consider midwifery once upon a time.
When you go out on tour, what will be the first three things you’ll pack?
My phone, warm cuddly pyjamas, and my walking boots, in the hope that the weather (and the touring schedule) will allow some proper walking.
What are you most looking forward to?
Other than the shows? Seeing parts of Scotland I’ve never visited before, and sampling the local cooking – and whisky!
What are you least looking forward to?
I’ll miss my husband and daughter horribly – though they are planning to join us on the tour for a couple of weekends, so I won’t go the whole time without seeing them.
What will you be listening to in the minibus?
Well, I don’t have an iPod, so I’m more likely to be reading. Christopher Brookmyre is a current favourite.
Which places are you most looking forward to visiting?
I suppose I’m quite excited about the islands. I’ve been to Skye before, and loved it, and I’m looking forward to seeing Barra and Benbecula.
Ruth is playing in Opera Highlights from 2 Feb to 20 Mar.
