Mascagni

Iris

SCOTTISH OPERA PREMIERE

Opera in Concert

A gripping story of innocence lost, Iris tells the tale of a naïve young girl. She is blissfully unaware of life’s darker side but, tempted from her home, suffers a brutal crash course in how cruel the world can be.

Looking to Japan for its inspiration, Iris pre-empted Puccini’s Butterfly by six years. An opera of contradictions, where the most despicable characters are often given the most alluring melodies, it is full of colour and vibrancy and includes the stunning ‘Hymn to the Sun’ – often extolled as Mascagni’s finest writing.
