GluckOrfeo & Euridice
Scottish Opera Young Company
Following the celebrations of its 10 year anniversary in 2018, the Scottish Opera Young Company (formerly Connect Company) enters an exciting new chapter this Season. In Spring 2019, new Artistic Director Jonathon Swinard conducts one of Gluck’s most popular and enduring works.
Based on the myth of Orpheus, Orfeo & Euridice tells the tale of one man’s determination to defy the gods and rescue his lover from Hades. But can he resist temptation long enough to save her?
In Orfeo & Euridice, Gluck sought to change the nature of opera and bring to it a ‘noble simplicity’. It remains his most popular work, largely due to the sheer beauty of its music which is full of emotion: at one moment full of fury, the next clear and pure. The young performers are joined by two professional singers as the Company returns to The Beacon in Greenock following the success of Dido and Aeneas in 2017.
