Staff Profile: Tobias Ringborg, Conductor
Tell us 3 things people might be surprised to learn about you?
- I'm afraid of flying (which is not a good thing in my profession)
- I’m a lazy person, always waiting with things until the last moment. I hope it will change soon.
- I spend quite a bit of time all by myself, and enjoy it.
What 's your favourite opera moment or character?
I would have to say Scarpia’s entrance. Ever since I sang in Tosca as a boy chorister, I get incredibly excited when that moment comes.
What do you do when you're not conducting?
I should be practising my violin…
What are you listening to at the moment?
I actually rarely have music playing at home, I love the silence. When I listen to music, it could be almost anything. I’m particularly fond of musical theatre.
If you weren't a conductor, what would be your ideal profession?
A Violinist (which I also am). But if you mean something non musical, it’s unimaginable.
Tell us your favourite place to be in the world?
I studied in New York City for three years, and loved it. At one point in my life I think I have to live there again.
Is there anything else you think we should know?
I look forward tremendously to returning to Scottish Opera. I did Cosi fan tutte two years ago, and it was just a very happy time. All those lovely Friday evenings at Universal in Glasgow... There are definitely some anecdotes from that time, but here's not the place (!)
What is your proudest moment to date?
I don’t have any children, so it’s got to be something else. I guess it could be when I conducted my first opera ten years ago. It was an incredibly strong dream come true.
