Glasgow 850
Scottish Opera is proud to be involved in the Glasgow 850 celebrations! A yearlong inclusive, citywide, programme of events and activities that reflect on how the city has transformed, particularly over the last 50 years, and how to promote further change – forming a better, more sustainable future over the next fifty years.
Memory Spinners
Scottish Opera’s Memory Spinners is a weekly group for people living with dementia along with their carers, friends and family.
Using music, storytelling, movement and visual arts, the programme helps people with dementia and their carers relax, get creative and form new support networks.
During the sharing, the Memory Spinners are celebrating Glasgow’s 850th Birthday with a trip ‘roon the toon on the Glasgow Subway on 15 June!
The Memory Spinners term ends 15 June – learn more about Memory Spinners through our website: Memory Spinners | Scottish Opera
Built on the Clyde – Primary school’s project
On May 29th at SEC Armadillo, a chorus of 300 children from across Glasgow’s schools perform Built on the Clyde, a mini opera with lyrics by Allan Dunn and music by Alan Penman celebrating the iconic river’s rich contribution to Scotland’s largest city on its 850th anniversary.
Premiered during the opening night of the three-night Clyde Chorus, Built on the Clyde will subsequently be available as a free digital resource pack for all Glasgow primary schools.
Community Choir Sharing
Our Glasgow-based Community Choir meets weekly to sing a mixture of opera, classical, folk, popular and world music, welcoming individuals from all walks of life and levels of experience.
To tie in with the Glasgow 850 celebrations, we’ll be exploring repertoire connected to the River Clyde and Glasgow. Our end of term performance will revolve around this theme and draw on participants own stories and connections to Glasgow in the past.
We are pleased to offer £5 tickets for this event, but we welcome and appreciate any donations to Scottish Opera. If you wish to donate, please do so through the checkout when booking.
