Celebrating 100 years of Turandot with a new Sir David McVicar production
This autumn, we present Puccini's epic masterpiece, Turandot, brought to life by the creative team behind our award-winning 2023 Il trittico: Director Sir David McVicar, Set & Props Designer Charles Edwards, and Conductor Stuart Stratford, who are joined by Costume Designer Doey Lüthi.
First launched to Supporters of Scottish Opera, we're now giving our dedicated audiences a chance to play their part in bringing Turandot to the stage, with our Play a Supporting Role appeal.
Play a Supporting Role offers a chance to be part of the magic of this incredible opera by sponsoring a prop, character, or a favourite piece of music, directly funding the craftmanship and talent seen on stage. Those who donate over £35 will be acknowledged in a variety of ways, including a credit in the opera’s programme, a free tour of the Production Studios during the rehearsal period, and invitations to exclusive behind-the-scenes events as well as limited edition framed prints.
Scottish Opera Music Director, Stuart Stratford says: ‘Sir David's vision promises to deliver a Turandot like no other. We are staging the rarely performed Alfano One ending of Turandot which was recorded to great acclaim by Scottish Opera in 1990, so this will be a real musical and visual treat for audiences.’
It is our vision for this production to return Turandot to its roots. An enigmatic tale of dark magic, riddles, death and love, the set design is inspired by vaudeville faded glamour, echoing the opulent American cinemas of the 1920s that were booming at the time that Puccini was composing Turandot.
There are a range of items you can choose from to donate towards your favourite character, prop or music — from Princess Turandot’s adorned headdress to ‘Nessun dorma’.
There will be six performances of Turandot in Glasgow from 22 October to 7 November and five
performances in Edinburgh from 11 November to 22 November. The production will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
Our full 2026/27 Season is announced on 7 May, and tickets go on sale for Friends and Patrons on 14 May before opening to the general public on 28 May.
