This Autumn, our Outreach and Education team travel to schools across Scotland with The Giant’s Harp, a production for Primary 3 & 4 pupils directed by Emma Doherty.
This interactive educational singing workshop and performance was created by mezzo-soprano and former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Lea Shaw and harpist Sharon Griffiths, both of whom perform in the show. Using the fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk, The Giant’s Harp explores different cultures around the world where the instrument takes centre stage, from Ancient Egypt to modern day Scotland!
Director of Outreach and Education Jane Davidson MBE said:
‘The Harp is the oldest stringed instrument in human history. From Ancient Egypt & China to the concert and opera stages of today, it enchants audiences of all ages. The Giant's Harp takes young audiences on a spellbinding journey through time and space to explore the history and culture of the harp in all its many forms and sizes.
Featuring five different harps, a singer and actor/puppeteer, this is a rare opportunity for Primary 3 & 4 pupils to hear a live performance celebrating this most magical of instruments.’
The Giant’s Harp is visiting schools in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh and the central belt throughout October and November.
'The whole audience was a joy – a lovely mixture of enthusiasm and attentiveness. [The children] were enthralled the moment they came in and listened to the harp being played. All the adults joined in too.' - Whiteinch Primary School, Glasgow
