Scottish Opera’s Community Choir stays connected with online rehearsals

Scottish Opera’s Community Choir were not going to let the Coronavirus stop them from singing, as they came together online to ensure their practice could continue.

The group, which usually meet on a Wednesday evening in The Robertson Trust Education Rooms at Theatre Royal Glasgow, were determined to continue their weekly sessions despite social isolation measures being in place. So, the group got creative and met up on Zoom (an online video communication channel) to sing together.

Scottish Opera’s Outreach and Education Department team were keen to ensure the practices went ahead, to maintain some normality in people’s lives. By setting up the online weekly sessions it allows people to continue to socialise with friends they have met at the choir.

A Community Choir member said: ‘I just wanted to thank Audrey, Katy and Beth from Scottish Opera for facilitating and leading last night’s choir practice. It was ‘pure dead brilliant’. Not only was I delighted I’d got passed Go by getting into Zoom, but it was terrific to see so many kent faces at this moment in time!’

The Community Choir meets every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9pm, and you don’t need to be able to read music or have any previous experience to join. They sing a whole range of music from opera, classical, pop, folk and world music. If you are over 16, and fancy joining, please contact Audrey Blake at audrey.blake@scottishopera.org.uk
