Houston Grand Opera announce first-ever recording of acclaimed opera Breaking the Waves by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek

On 7 August, the first-ever recording of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s opera Breaking the Waves is released by Houston Grand Opera.

Recorded during the acclaimed opera’s 2025 regional premiere in Houston, the cast is led by soprano Lauren Snouffer and bass-baritone Ryan McKinny, and conducted by HGO Music Director, Patrick Summers.

In 2019 we staged the European premiere of Breaking the Waves at Edinburgh International Festival, in a co-presentation with Opera Ventures Productions and the Festival, and co-produced with Houston Grand Opera, in association with Bristol Old Vic.

The world premiere of Mazzoli and Vavrek’s latest work, The Galloping Cure, is taking place this August in Edinburgh.

Based on the film by Lars von Trier, Breaking the Waves tells the story of Bess McNeill, a young woman living in a deeply religious community in the Scottish Highlands in the 1970s.

The first single ‘His Name Is Jan’ is out now, and the full album will be available in both physical and digital formats, with streaming offered on major platforms.
